China Box Office: Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation' Crosses $100M
China Box Office: Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation' Crosses $100M
Image from ‘Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation’ courtesy of Paramount
That puts it just below the $102.6m gross of the native crime caper Let the Bullets Fly, which means it should be passing said film sometime this afternoon. It ranks as the in Chinese box office history and should race up the list over the course of the Fri-Sun weekend. The film crossed $630m on Sunday and has now earned at least $640m worldwide and an outside shot at passing the $700m mark this weekend and thus becoming Tom Cruise’s biggest global blockbuster ever. It earned $91m last weekend overseas, so a $60m haul this weekend outside of America is possible, if not outright probable and that updated foreign number is only factoring in the China box office.
Obviously there will be a time and place to discuss the film in terms of its franchise success and its impact on Tom Cruise’s career. But the film itself, slowly making its way to $200 million domestic off a $55m debut (which sadly would be considered leggy in today’s environment) is about to surpass a flurry of recent US hits in China, and it is already the 16th biggest US release ever with plenty still to come. It’s doing it in 2D, as the film is already the second biggest 2D China release from America outside of the soon-to-be-surpassed $121m gross of Interstellar last year.
Unlike Terminator Genisys (also Paramount/Viacom Inc and also Skydance Productions), this one hasn’t been remotely frontloaded. The Arnold Schwarzenegger sequel had a blowout opening day last month but now has basically cashed out at around $115m, or 4.3x opening day-to-total multiplier, which makes it a lot like the domestic path of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ($92m opening day/$381m domestic total). In fact, the film has already surpassed the entire $101m China box office total for Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.
Obviously there are caveats to be noted. Yes, studios often take as little as 25% of the box office from a given ticket sale. Yes, China only lets around 34 American movies play there each year, which turns the quest to top the global box office into a kind of lottery. And yes, the “all-time grossers” list for China is going to be filled with newer releases as the marketplace has exploded in the last few years. But Minions, a $1 billion grosser outside of China, has barely cracked $28m in the first three days, which isn’t remotely terrible of course. And Adam Sandler’s Pixels has earned a $3.6m two-day gross since opening on Wednesday, which is pretty terrible.

‘Mission Impossible 6’ could be the last of the franchise; MI6 expected to surpass MI5: Rogue Nation blockbuster hit
‘Mission Impossible 6’ could be the last of the franchise; MI6 expected to surpass MI5: Rogue Nation blockbuster hit
Tom Cruise's 'Mission Impossible' will be back for its 6th
installment. ''Mission Impossible 6'' is slated to be filmed summer of
2016, and many say that this could be high time for Ethan Hunt to go out
on top. In what could be the last of the franchise, Paramount and
Cruise expects and aims to have an even better and bigger blockbuster
finale with MI6.
Tom Cruise is not as young as when he started the Mission Impossible franchise and so Cruise's Hunt will eventually come to an end. An A-list actor, Crtuise will have to be careful not to milk and overdo the 'Mission Impossible' story of Ethan Hunt if they want to have an unforgettable 'Mission Impossible' run, and possibly a blockbuster ending.
MI6 is a greenlit project even before 'Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation' and understandably so. The 'Mission: Impossible' franchise has a string of financial success, especially overseas. According to, 'MI5: Rogue Nation' has a worldwide total of $511m, with $328.7m coming from overseas.
The previous 'Mission: Impossible' films, released in 1996, 2000, 2006 and 2011 respectively, have accumulated $2 billion at the worldwide box office. With 'MI5: Rogue Nation' going strong months after release, that number is set go higher. Comprehensibly, Paramount Pictures will definitely give MI6 a go.
In a bid to advertise the film even more, Tom Cruise and co-star Rebecca Ferguson went to China for a promotional event after the recent release of their film in the country. According to the UK, the fifth Mission Impossible film should surpass the $101m that the fourth earned in China in 2011.
With large successes behind it, it is not hard to imagine that 'Mission Impossible 6' will follow suit. Critics say it could be the last second to the last film of the franchise. Should this be case, Cruise and Paramount Pictures have the task of making it better than ever, and with that, hope for a the biggest blockbuster hit they've had.

Shakira's trainer, founder of AKT InMotion Anna Kaiser recently opened up to about the singer's exercise routine, which not surprisingly, involves dance.
"We do interval training, so it’s a combination of cardio and strength intervals with yoga poses in between," Kaiser explained. "The cardio is dance-based cardio, so it keeps it fun. Shakira’s a dancer, so it’s fun to be able to get back into your groove and be able to use your spirit and your soul while you’re working out. It also helps with getting comfortable with your body again."
Kaiser said that they began working together around two months following Sasha's birth, and that their primary goal was to rebuild the abdominal muscles.
"We needed to start with simple exercises to reconnect her body in a specific way, because training after pregnancy is really different than any other time of your life," said Kaiser. "Your abdominal wall has been compromised, so you really need to strengthen your core in a very specific way."
also reports that Kaiser's other famous clients include Sarah Jessica Parker and Kelly Ripa. The trainer has also appeared in Shakira's music videos as a dancer and choreographer.
Of course, having a healthy body is imperative for a parent like Shakira, who admitted to E! Online that she wanted to add more to her family. The mother-of-two said: "I would love to have eight or nine kids with Gerard [Piqué]. My own fútbol team."
She added that her partner, FC Barcelona player Gerard Piqué is a hands-on dad. She shared, "He is very involved with his son. He is always there for him, and that's a big advantage for me as I cannot imagine it any other way."
Shakira also gushed about being a mom, saying, "When you have a baby, when you feel his love, you feel so at peace with the world. You just want to share the good news and share how happy you feel."
Allround Nasir stars as Bangladesh A beat India A in second one-dayer
Allround Nasir stars as Bangladesh A beat India A in second one-dayer
Allrounder Nasir Hossain displayed a brilliant all-round show to lead Bangladesh A to victory against India A in the second one-day match.
Mominul Haque and his men made a fine turnaround to level the three-match series 1-1.
Bangladesh A posted a modest 252 for 8 before their bowlers skittled out India A for 187 in 42.2 overs.
Although India A were off to a steady start in their chase, runs were hard to come by for the hosts.
After pacer Rubel Hossain sent Mayank Agarwal (24) packing, captain and India A top scorer Unmukt Chand (56) led his team to 119 for 1 with an 88-run stand with Manish Pandey (36).
The India chase looked on course but Bangladesh took control immediately after the offbreak of Nasir was introduced.
He broke the stand sending Chand back before Rubel took out Pandey in his second spell.
After Nasir took out Suresh Raina (17), he and Rubel then ran through the middle and lower order, sharing nine India A wickets between them.
Gurkeerat Singh (34), who was taken out by Al Amin Hossain as the last wicket, was the only batsman to reach a two-digit figure among India A's last seven batsmen.
Earlier, a fine century from Nasir took Bangladesh to the respectable total after they were sent to bat.
Soumya Sarkar (24) and Anamul Hauqe (34) laid the foundation after Bangladesh A lost opener Rony Talukdar for a duck in the first over.
Anamul and Soumya made 60 runs for the second wicket before the tourists suffered a batting collapse and slid to 82 for 5.
As captain Mominul (3) and Sabbir Rahman (1) went back in a hurry, Bangladesh A lost four wickets for just 22 runs.
Nasir and Liton (45) then paired in a 70-run recovery stand and regained momentum.
After Liton's departure, Nasir added 50 more with Arafat Sunny (17) before notching another 40 with Rubel (9 not out) to help Bangladesh cross 250.
Nasir's 96-ball innings had 12 boundaries and a six.
Rishi returned 3 for 44 while Karn Sharma chipped in with two wickets.
Bangladesh suffered a huge 96-run defeat in the first match. The third and last 50-over match of the tour will be played on Sunday at the same venue.

One-day and T20 may be popular but Test is real cricket: Sourav Ganguly
One-day and T20 may be popular but Test is real cricket: Sourav Ganguly
One-day and T20 cricket may be very popular but the real cricket is all about playing Tests that actually tests the skills of a player, says former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly.
He was addressing a packet Rabindra Centenary hall in Tripura capital
Agartala Sunday evening during the annual prize giving ceremony of
Tripura Cricket Association (TCA).
“Test cricket is the real cricket because there the real skill of a player is tested, However popular one-day cricket or T20 cricket may be but the real game is playing [five-day] cricket,” said Sourav Ganguly who was advising the young crickets of the state who came to see their ‘Dada’ (elder brother) , as Ganguly is popular addressed as.
He also advised the budding cricketers that infrastructure does not necessarily help in making good players. Rather good players can develop by utilizing the available infrastructure. That, he said, was the secret of any good cricketer.
“Only good infrastructure cannot develop good players, infrastructure is just only a part of the process of developing good players.
"What is necessary to make good player is the talent. How well one uses the infrastructure to become a good player is the issue,” said Ganguly who hails from Kolkata.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Sports Minister Sahid Chowdhury, TCA Secretary Sourav Dasgupta was also there in the program who greeted Ganguly and requested him to suggest and trainee the cricketers of the state.

Australia to flog injured paceman Starc until he breaks down
Australia to flog injured paceman Starc until he breaks down
Australia plan to bowl paceman Mitchell Starc until he breaks down with a chronic ankle injury that will require surgery and a four-month spell from cricket, selector Rod Marsh said on Monday.
Starc is suffering bone spurs in an ankle but has been
retained in Australia's 15-man squad for their tour of Bangladesh, even as
fellow left-armer Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood are rested.
"My understanding of Starc is that he can keep going until it actually gets a hell of a lot worse, and then he will have to have an operation," selectors chairman Marsh told reporters in Adelaide. "Rest won't help him.
"He has got spurs in his ankle and there is a bit of bone that has broken off and floating and every now and then it gets into a position where it is just chronically painful.
"Eventually it is going to have to be removed but it will take another three or four months after the operation for him to be able to play again.
"We have got some pretty important cricket coming including the T20 World Cup and we would like to see Starc lead the attack for that... but if he can't, he can't. But at the moment the plan is for him to keep going."
Named the best player at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year, Starc has been troubled by his ankle for months and needed pain-killing injections to get him through the Ashes series, which Australia lost 3-2.
He missed the fourth one-day international against England but after having a cortisone injection, returned for the decisive fifth and final match in Manchester on Sunday which the tourists won to seal the series 3-2.
After five months on the road, Starc will return home to Australia for 10 days' rest before packing his bags again to head to the subcontinent for the two-Test tour of Bangladesh.
"To be honest, it's nice to be going home for a little bit (to have) a few days in my own bed and see the family," Starc said in Manchester.

Pakistan recall Fawad Alam from Test wilderness for England
Pakistan recall Fawad Alam from Test wilderness for England
Pakistan recalled batsman Fawad Alam from Test wilderness on Wednesday while paceman Wahab Riaz returned from a hand injury to find a place in the 15-man squad for the three-match series against England starting next month in the United Arab Emirates.
Left-handed Fawad, who played his third Test in New Zealand in 2009
before being dropped from the side, was rewarded for his rich form in
domestic cricket.
The 29-year-old, however, cannot take his place in Pakistan's crammed middle order for granted with captain Misbah-ul-Haq, former captain Younus Khan and one-day skipper Azhar Ali being the automatic choices.
Their bowling department has been strengthened by Wahab's return from a hand injury he had sustained during the recent tour of Sri Lanka.
Leg-spinner Yasir Shah and left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar are the two frontline spinners in their slow bowling department.
"In the light of Misbah-ul-Haq recommendations, we have kept the options open for the 16th player in the Test squad," chief selector Haroon Rashid said in a statement, referring to left-arm spinners Zafar Gohar and Mohammad Asghar who would play practice matches against England.
"... whoever among the two performs well would be added to the Test squad," he added.
Pakistan ignored the trio of former skipper Salman Butt and pacemen Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir who were cleared earlier this month to return to cricket after serving bans for their involvement in a 2010 spot-fixing scandal in England.
They will be under strict monitoring for months before they can return to international cricket, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board.
There was also no place in the squad for off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who has struggled since returning to international cricket from a ban for an illegal bowling action.
Abu Dhabi hosts the first Test from Oct. 13, while Dubai (Oct. 22-26) and Sharjah (Nov. 1-5) are venues of the next two matches.
Pakistan Squad:

Uncapped Ansari wins place in England Test squad
Uncapped Ansari wins place in England Test squad
Uncapped Surrey all-rounder Zafar Ansari was named in England's squad on Tuesday for the forthcoming three Test series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.
Left-armer Ansari, 23, is the third spinner in the 16-man team alongside Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid.
Moeen could be used as an opening batsman with captain Alistair Cook, although uncapped Alex Hales has also been included, despite failing to impress in the one-day international series against Australia.
There was no place, however, for opener Adam Lyth or Gary Ballance, both deemed to have failed during the Ashes Test series against Australia that England won 3-2.
Batsman James Taylor won a Test spot after some impressive performances in the one-day international series against the Australians.
"Zafar Ansari's potential excites us and he will provide strong competition for Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali in the Test squad after enjoying an excellent domestic season with both bat and ball for Surrey," national selector James Whitaker said in a England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) statement.
"Alex Hales has scored heavily for Nottinghamshire in first-class cricket this season, has shown he can play match-winning innings for England in white-ball cricket and fully deserves an opportunity to compete for a place at the top of the order in our Test side."
Ansari, who has a degree in politics and sociology from Cambridge University, played down his chances of breaking into the playing eleven.
"It's going to be hard," he told Sky Sports News. "There are a lot of guys there who have been playing well.
"If the opportunity comes, then great, but if not I'm gonna run on with the drinks with as much energy as possible!"
The first Test starts on Oct. 13 in Abu Dhabi, followed by matches in Dubai (Oct. 22) and Sharjah (Nov. 1).
A four-match ODI series and three Twenty20 matches follow. Left-arm spinner Stephen Parry of Lancashire has been recalled to the Twenty20 squad, which also features Sussex paceman Chris Jordan, now fully recovered from the side injury which ruled him out of international contention mid-way through the season.
Ben Stokes has been rested for the limited overs matches.
"Ben has been an outstanding performer for England this summer and this decision reflects a desire to manage his workload across a busy winter period in all three formats of the game," Whitaker said.
The ECB also announced that former England captain Paul Collingwood and former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene have been appointed to the England management team as consultants.
While Collingwood will work with the limited overs squad in the UAE and during next year's World Twenty20, Jayawardene will act as the batting consultant to the Test squad.
Test squad: Alastair Cook (captain), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Zafar Ansari, Jonny Bairstow, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, James Taylor, Mark Wood
ODI squad: Eoin Morgan (captain), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, James Taylor, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
T20 squad: Eoin Morgan (captain), Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Stephen Parry, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Dinamo celebrate impressive 2-1 win over Arsenal
Dinamo celebrate impressive 2-1 win over Arsenal
Dinamo Zagreb made a dream start to their Champions League campaign after a goal in each half gave them a 2-1 home win over 10-man Arsenal in their Group F match on Wednesday.
Having failed to advance past the group stage of Europe's elite club competition in their previous four attempts, Dinamo produced a morale-boosting performance in the Maksimir stadium.
Organised defending aided by a packed midfield frustrated a disjointed Arsenal and the home side always looked dangerous on the break, with Algeria striker El Hilal Arabi Soudani at the heart of all their moves.
Arsenal held the upper hand in the opening 20 minutes as Giroud missed two good chances, hitting the post with a scuffed effort after Dinamo's Portuguese keeper Eduardo had kept out the Frenchman's header with an acrobatic save.
Worse followed for the visitors when Giroud was shown a second yellow card for a reckless challenge after he was booked for dissent.
Sensing blood, a fired-up Dinamo came storming out after the interval and livewire Soudani, a handful all night for his markers, hit the post with a glancing header barely a minute into the second half.
The home fans were in raptures in the 58th minute when Chilean junior Fernandes rose at the near post to head home an inviting Paulo Machado corner past a static Arsenal defence.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger then replaced Oxlade-Chamberlain with Walcott and the winger made a quick impact, racing clear of two markers before he beat the advancing Eduardo with a sublime finish in the 79th minute.
Arsenal pressed forward in the closing stages but Dinamo held firm with some last-gasp interceptions in their penalty box.
